Chapter Twenty-Six

The Hospital

The nurse is waiting outside the cubicle, for crying out loud.

‘You don’t need to wait for me,’ I call out. ‘I can manage on the crutches – I’ll see myself back.’

‘It’s fine.’

‘I might be a while,’ I try. ‘I think I’m a bit constipated.’

‘Take your time. There’s no rush.’

Constipation as alibi – how has my life come to this? I thought the NHS was under-resourced? Just my luck I end up in the world’s most over-staffed ward.

I groan, to keep it authentic. I’ve done some pretty humiliating things in my time, but this takes the cake. Why can’t she go and drain an abscess or something? Empty a catheter? Bandage a limb?

A crackle comes from outside. Sounds like it’s coming from the corridor. I hear her shift on her foam soles then walk in the direction of the door. Voices then. I can’t hear the words, but from the intonation, it sounds like a question.

‘Yes,’ I hear my nurse say. And, ‘One.’ And, ‘Jane Reece.’

I close my eyes, wonder how long I’m going to have to sit here.

The foam soles squeak back. ‘How’re we doing in there?’

‘Who was that?’ I ask. ‘I heard voices.’

‘The police,’ she says.

‘What did they want?’

‘Oh, they’re looking for… someone.’

‘Who?’

No answer. I don’t need one. I know who they’re looking for.

‘Jane?’ Nursey’s voice is close. ‘I’m just going to pop out a second, OK? I’ll be back in five minutes.’

Brilliant.
